A massive 105 per cent jump in searches for expat destinations by US citizens seems to confirm anti-Trump voters’ determination to leave the USA.

InternationalLiving.com is one of the most popular websites for information about emigration, with more than a million would-be expats every month logging on to compare destinations. According to the company, demand for its services rose by an incredible 105 per cent between Trump’s election and his inauguration.

A spokesperson for the website confirmed that, even prior to the election, a good number of ordinary people as well as celebrities were checking their options should the result not be to their liking. The massive response since Trump was elected seems to suggest many of those who were dismayed by the election’s result are now voting with their feet.

InternationalLiving’s executive editor Jennifer Stevens told the media an increasing number of people are now seriously researching their options as regards emigrating. Some, she added, will have been considering a move but needed the push the election result provided.

Analysis of search queries has shown Mexico to be a favourite with most enquirers, followed by Costa Rica, Ecuador, Italy and Panama. All these destinations rate highly on the website as regards their suitability for retirees looking for an improved quality of life at less cost than in the home country.

Mexico’s major attraction is that English is spoken across its major expat hotspots, making assimilation far less complicated than in non-English speaking countries. Costa Rica’s tropical beauty is a draw for many, as is its governments’ commitment to 100 per cent renewable energy and the fact that it has no army.

Ecuador is a relatively new expat destination boasting traditional colonial architecture, glorious beaches, an equatorial climate and an amazingly low cost of living. Romantic Italy attracts expats for its pretty hill towns, medieval villages, spectacular countryside and, of course, its famed cuisine and wines.

Panama is just three hours by plane from Miami and boasts comfortably mild weather, a varied climate, mountain retreats and tropical beaches. One of its strong points for US expat retirees is its use of the US dollar.
