If you’re dreaming of the perfect job somewhere in America, researching for the most expat-friendly destination is a good start.

As with every world country's major conurbations, USA cities may or may not be especially expat-friendly, but feeling welcome is an essential if you’re going to succeed in a challenging new job as well as settling into a new life. Usually, expat-friendliness is found in cities with multi-cultural populations and a wide range of diverse work opportunities, with five USA cities identified as being the best of the rest.

It’s no surprise that New York is the USA’s most popular city for expat life as it’s simply a huge melting-pot of races, cultures and religions as well as having a world-famous history of welcoming immigrants. What’s now the Big Apple was the first sight of a new land for millions of immigrants over a long period of time, and is still welcoming outsiders and making them its own. Living and working in New York is admittedly challenging and often cut-throat, but for expats its multi-cultural aspect means they don’t have to feel like strangers for long.

For expats hoping for a job in the tech industry, San Francisco’s Silicon Valley is the place to be. It’s a liberal city which once saw the rise of Flower Power and the Hippy generation, and it still attracts individuals to whom being themselves is the most important lifestyle they could have. Trendy Chicago is famous as much for its Mob years as it was for its industrial heritage, and nowadays it’s still the Mid-West’s commercial centre, home to major Scandinavian and Middle Eastern communities.

For Antipodean expats still missing their home country’s weather and water sports, Miami is the place to be. Its huge Cuban community and endless beaches are the star performers, and expats love the party atmosphere as well as the reasonable cost of living by American standards. Permanent citizens welcome expats from all over, and the laid-back lifestyle is a welcome in itself.

Los Angeles with its slightly cooler climate is a popular stop-off for expats looking for work in the movie industry, but the city has more to offer than just Hollywood. It’s a good place to start a business, and the welcome here is as genuine as it can be due to the city's popularity with incomers from all over the world. For many the major advantage of heading to America is its English language, but non-English speaking expats shouldn’t have any problems finding a welcome due to the USA’s long history of international immigration.
