Best known in the UK for its celebrity addicts, the London-based Priory Clinic is now open in Dubai’s prestigious Heathcare City.
With its nine clinics and hospital now covering England and Scotland, the Priory’s early days saw it become famous as the fashionable port of call for celebrities with addictions varying from alcohol, drugs and sex to other substance abuses and even shopaholic syndrome. For some famous names, their ship docked at the Priory’s port of call more than once, giving the UK’s gutter press a good number of shock/horror stories.
Nowadays, both its London hospital and its walk-in, non- residential clinics provide mental health treatments for a larger variety of conditions including depression, post traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and trauma/abuse issues as well as addictions. Its first venture outside the UK is now open in Dubai’s state of the art Heathcare City, and is linked with its UK facilities.
Known as the Priory Wellbeing Centre, the range of its available treatments cover much the same mental health problems as its UK operation and are intended to attract both expats working in Dubai and Emiratis in the local community. As in the UK, all consultations are being treated as confidential, and payments is by self-funding or private health insurance.
According to the company’s Middle East Medical Director Dr Saaed Islam, the facility is staffed by counsellors and psychiatrists and is committed to effectively delivering accessible mental health services to those who need them. Islam added no-one, whatever their problems, should feel ashamed or scared to seek help.
In an interview with Emirates 24/7, he said there are many reasons why a particular country or region sees higher numbers of a specific condition than its neighbouring regions, adding that the new centre’s discreet, friendly service can address individual issues and help with long-term recovery. The centre’s fast-track approach to diagnosis and its position within Dubai’s healthcare hub is set up to deal with a comprehensive list of conditions not confined to the Middle East, including executive burn-out, anxiety and addiction to online pornography.
