If finding the best possible expat quality of life as well as a shot at career enhancement is your goal, a recent survey lists the top ten world countries, eight of which are in Europe.

The top three world cities for a comfortable expat experience are all in European states, with Vienna taking the top spot followed by Zurich and Munich. As a whole, Europe is the best region for expat quality of life due to its expert healthcare, childcare provisions, cultural offerings and entertainment. Infrastructure and real estate are also important and, is these troubled times, safety and security are top notch.

For the last decade, Vienna has kept its number one spot in the survey, and isn’t at all likely to slip down the listings any time soon. For would-be expats looking further afield for their next assignment, Vancouver and Auckland shared their places with Munich and Zurich, mostly for their safety and satisfactory work-life balance. New entries to the top ten were Dusseldorf in sixth place, Frankfurt in seventh, Copenhagen at eighth, Geneva at ninth and Basel at tenth. As regards other world regions, Oceania saw four cities in the top 20 including Sydney and Wellington, and the North American cities rated well for quality of life were all located in Canada.

Asian cities were certain to include Singapore, which came in at 25th, and Japan also scored with four of its cities featuring in the top 60 including Tokyo at 49th. Only two Middle Eastern cities made it into the top 100, with Dubai ranked as 74th and Abu Dhabi at 78th. Nowadays, personal safety is high on every expat’s agenda and includes law enforcement, crime levels, personal freedoms and political stability. It’s no surprise that European cities scored well and that most destinations in Africa and the Middle East are firmly stuck at the lower end of the listing.
