The number of New Zealanders heading to Australia in the search of work before heading home unsuccessful is on the rise.
The Auckland Chamber of Commerce chief executive Michael Barnett said hundreds of expat Kiwis have made the journey but returned to their homeland upon discovering that the prospect of work has faded dramatically in recent times.
Barnett, who was in the Western Australia city of Perth at the weekend to attend its first jobs fair, said that thousands of people visited his stall to enquire about employment opportunities. The fairs are designed to attract Australian workers to New Zealand to fill skills gaps in industries like IT, engineering and construction.
He explained that many Kiwis moved to Australia when it was enjoying a stronger economy, but that now it was starting to weaken they were growing more interested in returning home, particularly to take up construction work.
He said that the travelled to Australia, especially Western Australia, when the economy in their homeland was a little flat, but now things have reversed they are heading home in greater numbers. He noted that many of these expats have acquired great skills and are looking to put them into good use in New Zealand, which is exactly what the country needs.
