Expats in Dubai will have a spectacular New Year’s Eve as the emirate again attempts to beat the Guinness world record for the largest New Year’s Eve fireworks display.

The amazing, if somewhat brief, programme of fireworks will be launched from 400 locations on the offshore Palm Jumeirah Island and is expected to break Kuwait’s record display held on its 50th anniversary in 2012. The display will only last six minutes, but will consist of 400,000 synchronised shots of brilliantly coloured fireworks with a musical accompaniment.

The programme will start just before the countdown to the New Year with a fiery Flying Falcon circling the World Island and will include a massive UAE flag, itself bidding for yet another Guinness world record as the planet's largest pyrotechnic flag. The magnificent finale will be a sunrise scene, marking Dubai’s landmark year during which it won hosting rights for World Expo 2020.

Over 100 computers will control the display, designed by US-based Fireworks by Grucchi, and the spectacle will spread out over 100kms. Each single shot will cover 700m, and almost a year of planning has gone into this one display, with fireworks specially designed and imported from the US.

One thing’s for sure, high-rise apartments all over the city will be crammed with friends and families of the owners, all desperate to get the best view ever. For the rest of us, the Dubai Shoreline, Jumeirah Beach and Umm Suqueim Beach are all vantage points with the best views.
