The recently-published annual HSBC Expat survey has revealed that Asian locations offer the most affordable costs of living due to their cheaper accommodation, utility charges and groceries.
The well-regarded survey, based on expats’ ability to afford essential services and goods as well as on average disposable incomes, saw Switzerland hit the number one position as regards overall quality of life. However, for mere expat mortals rather than retired bankers, Asian destinations won out on sheer affordability.
Thailand and Vietnam won points for offering an enjoyable lifestyle at a cost far less than in the USA, Europe and the UK, with expat respondents stating that their standards of living and accommodation were far higher than in the home countries. In Asia as a whole, 65 per cent of those surveyed had a higher level of disposable income and better quality of life.
China is becoming more popular with expat workers, with over 76 per cent of those who replied saying that their spending power had increased considerably. India, nowadays another popular destination for expat professionals, and scored as the sixth most affordable country for expat living.
Interestingly, as well as providing a lifestyle bargain basement for expats, Asia is also a favourite with high-earning professionals. According to the survey, they’re three times more likely to be earning over $250,000 a year than those in similar positions in Europe.
