A quick-thinking Canadian woman living and working in Dubai managed to thwart a rape attempt by a UAE soldier by dialing 999 whilst the man was driving to a remote spot.
The 21-year-old Canadian had agreed to meet the soldier at an agreed location in order to have dinner with him, and had driven her own car to the meeting place. After parking her vehicle, she joined the man in his car and the pair headed for a restaurant in Dubai’s International City. After the meal, she asked the soldier to drop her off at her parking place as she was feeling tired and wanted to return home.
Speaking at the Dubai Court of First Instance the woman told prosecutors she had become worried when her date drove straight past her parked car and headed out of the city. At that point, she realised her dire situation and, without the man’s noticing, dialled 999 on her smartphone and kept the line open in order that the car could be tracked.
When the accused rapist stopped the car for the first time in a dimly lit area, she tried to escape, but was pulled back into the car by her neck. The man then drove to the edge of the desert and began sexually assaulting his victim in spite of her attempts at resistance. Luckily, her smartphone ruse had succeeded as police were able to hear everything and had already dispatched officers who arrived just as the rapist had managed to pull off her dress after threatening her with violence if she continued to resist.
Prosecutors accused the soldier of kidnapping the woman and molesting her whilst she was in his car, although the would-be rapist was not visible in court. She told the court she had first met the man two weeks before the attempted rape whilst she was at a local petrol station. The story, reported by Expat Media, gives a strong warning to single expat women in Dubai.
