An expat in Dubai is on trial facing charges of kidnapping a woman and using ‘white magic’ in order to convince her to be his wife.

The Dubai Court of First Instance was informed that the pair first met in October last year and the woman alleges that the man persistently asked her to be his wife, leading to her getting a new mobile phone number. The 41-year-old is also facing charges of assaulting his 36-year-old British victim and spitting on the Holy Quran.

In March, the Frenchman is said to have gone to the woman’s Motor City apartment and sprinkled a mixture of dust and water on the door – a white magic ritual to try to convince her that she was in love with him.

The woman said that the floor was wet and when she opened the door the defendant was inside the apartment. He is then alleged to have pulled her inside and locked the door. The women went on to say that he pushed her onto a chair and asked why she there was a Holy Quran and other books about the Prophet Mohammed in the apartment, to which she replied that she was studying Islam.

The defendant is then alleged to have spat on the Quran before slapping her and saying over and over again that he loved her. She said that the ordeal went on for four hours before the man left and she contacted the police. Prosecutors allege that one of the Frenchman’s friends said he had looked on the internet for white magic tips to make the woman fall in love with him.

The defendant denies all charges and the trial has been adjourned.
