The wonders of the desert and the traditional Bedouin culture and way of life are now open to expats joining the annual UAE 500km camel trek.
Registration for the journey of a lifetime across the region’s vast deserts is now open, with expats of all nationalities invited to join in. The trek itself covers the deserts’ vast expanse of unique natural beauty and gives a rare insight into the lives and culture of the tough Bedouin tribes who called the seemingly endless dunes their home. This unique experience shows the traditional Bedouin way of life with its perils and triumphs, and offers a rare exposure to the proud heritage of the Emirati nations.
Organised annually by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Centre, the trek itself takes 11 days, with no previous experience with camels necessary as full training is provided at the HHC camel farm in Al Nakhra, just off the Dubai-Al Ain highway. HHC’s events director Hind al Qemzi emphasised the need for full training, especially for first-time participants, explaining the trek is very challenging and needs each person to fully understand and be able to perform all the different tasks required to undertake the journey.
Most importantly, each participant must be able to take care of his camel, feed it and look after its saddle in addition to riding it successfully. For this reason, those attending the training sessions will be graded and shortlisted according to their performances during the course. The trek is scheduled to take place between January 16th and 25th next year, with HHC providing all necessary logistics including tents, food, water and other provisions, a medical team on standby and, of course, the camels themselves.
Training sessions are to take place weekly between 5 p.m and 8 p.m on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays, with participants able to choose their most suitable dates. Application is by email at [email protected], with Camel Trek 2019 as the subject.
