Bangladesh to send 500,000 maids to Saudi

The government of Bangladesh has announced that it is set to send half a million qualified housemaids to Saudi Arabia once the two countries have finalised an expatriate recruitment agreement.

A source from the Ministry of Labour in Saudi Arabia said that a delegate will travel to the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka to finalise the agreement, link Bangladeshi companies with Saudi recruitment firms and decide the date the recruitment will commence.

The Bangladeshi Consul General Shahid Al-Kareem said that his government had done all it could to ensure it met the Gulf state’s recruitment requirements. He revealed that they put the new Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment in place as well as developing a database featuring two million qualified candidates.

He went on to say that the Saudi Ministry of Labour delegation would be arriving in Dhaka in the near future to discuss job opportunities, work visas, age requirements and salary details. He noted that Bangladesh could offer qualified workers for a variety of jobs including engineers, housemaids, drivers and nurses, adding that there were now 64 training centres in the South Asian country designed specifically for training individuals for these roles abroad.

At present there in excess of 1.2 million Bangladeshi workers living in Saudi Arabia.
