Mercer’s Quality of Living survey has ranked Dubai as the number one place to live in the Middle East and Africa – although it came in 74th in the overall list.
It is the third successive year that the Emirate came out on top for the region, according to the international human resources group. However, when all 230 cities that were taken into consideration are accounted for, Dubai finished in 74th position - some way off some of its European counterparts.
Mercer’s information solutions leader for the Middle East, Nuno Gomes, said that factors such as social and political environment, health and public services, recreational activities and natural environment all had to be taken into account when companies send employees on international assignments, and such lists helped employers work out the compensation packages and allowances they should give their staff.
He went on to say that things like law enforcement effectiveness, internal stability, medical facilities and crime levels were also key considerations and things that Dubai continually scored highly on.
Abu Dhaboi, Muscat, Doha and Oman completed the region’s top 5 respectively, while the world’s top five were Vienna, Zurich, Auckland, Munich and Vancouver. Meanwhile, two of the cities in the bottom 10 were from the Middle East region – Baghdad and Sanaa.
