The founder/owner of the Beijing-based South Beauty restaurant group has resigned her membership of the powerful Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
Chinese legislator turned highly successful businesswoman Zhang Lan recently removed herself and her US$490 million fortune to an as yet unknown overseas destination, renouncing her Chinese citizenship at about the same time. Her migration has caused embarrassment in China due to her previous opposition to citizens who migrated and changed nationality in order to protect their fortunes by transferring them out of the country after they left.
According to CPPCC’s vice-chairman Zheng Huang, two months after she left the country and renounced her citizenship, she contacted the committee with her resignation. China does not allow dual citizenship, and Zhang’s departure was regarded as highly controversial by many Chinese.
During a previous interview on Chinese TV, Zhang stated she had refused a Canadian governmental invitation to migrate to Canada, offered after she had spent many years working in the country. She told the interviewer she was Chinese by blood and would always be loyal to China.
