If you’re set on living in Spain as an expat, you’ll be happy to hear there’s no need to cut back on watching or participating in your favourite sports.
Expat life in a different culture can be trying as regards finding new pursuits to follow and leisure activities to enjoy. If your dream retirement or working location is Spain and you’re a sports fan or enthusiast, there’s no need to worry, the Spanish are fixated on the beautiful game and many other sports.
Since 1950 or thereabouts, football has dominated the Spanish sporting scene, soaring into the international arena with teams such as Barcelona and Real Madrid. La Liga is the country’s top professional league, and the clubs are regularly home to famous international players such as Beckham and Welsh international Gareth Bale.
If cycling’s your thing, you’ll know that Spain, along with France and Italy, is home to the annual Grand Tour, with its huge fan base gathering every August through September to get a glimpse of the year’s potential winner. The Spanish weather is great for amateur cyclists, and mountain biking is a favourite with expats and locals alike.
Golf is huge here, partly due to Spanish heroes Ballesteros and Olazabai, but also because Brit retirees love the game. Rural Spain is well stocked with golf courses, a number of which are of international standard, and the mild, sunny climate allows year-round access.
Another popular sport here is basketball, with the Liga ACB one of Europe’s major basketball leagues. There are 18 league teams dotted around the country, including two in the Canaries, with matches easy to catch and great fun to watch.
Traditionally-inclined expats will be overjoyed to find the quintessentially British game of cricket is on the upswing in Spain, especially at resorts along the Mediterranean coastline. Whether you’re an active sports player or an ardent supporter, Spain’s choice of sporting events and opportunities will keep you happy all year long.
