From the year 2009 and 2015, the amount of Spanish people living abroad grew by 48 per cent. Recent figures show that as of the 1st January there were 2,183,043 Spaniards registered on consular lists compared with 1,471,691 six years ago.
The data, which was released by the National Institute of Statistics of Madrid, must not indicate that the main reason is the Iberian Peninsula’s mass exodus according to experts. It was found that the increase in the amount of Spanish people moving abroad was due to the search of a better lifestyle and that this was the main factor behind this significant increase of the naturalization of Spaniards abroad.
Cuba, Argentina, Ecuador, the United Stated and United Kingdom are the countries with the highest recorded growth of Spanish people in their respective countries. The Americas have the largest amount of Spaniards registered at consulates at 63.4 per cent; this is followed by 33.5 per cent in Europe and 3.1 per cent in other countries across the globe.
