An expat businessman who killed his Russian wife after learning that she was born a man has been handed a 24-year jail sentence.
Chris Collier, 40, battered and smothered his wife Julia, 35, at their Kusadasi apartment on Turkey’s Aegean coast. He was taken in by police the day after the killing on 27 November, 2010, and was sent to prison last month after a Turkish court found him guilty of murder.
Police investigated the couple’s relationship after claims on an internet forum for expats that Collier purchased his wife online and that she had been born a man. One blogger said that Collier said that he paid for his bride and moved to Kusadasi, before saying she used to be a man.
Prior to moving to Turkey over 10 years ago, Collier had a well-paid job at Phones4U. He was among the first people employed by the company’s owner and creator John Caudwell, who later sold the business for £1.46bn in 2006.
The court heard during the trail that Collier knocked Julia unconscious using a hard object and then smothered her to death. Collier was a manager of an estate agency in Kusadasi and his wife was a professional lounge singer and pianist working in some of the town’s resorts.
