Some 500 British expats from France and other EU member states joined the recent London People’s Vote march.

Remain in France Together members totalled 200, with 1,000 more members’ names printed on T-shirts and banners in support of the fight to reverse the Brexit referendum result. RIFT founder Kalba Meadows told the press the majority of members have been unable to vote in the referendum which has turned their lives into nightmares for more than 850 days. She added everyone came together on the march to demand a second referendum in which they could actually vote for their rights.

The march has also been seen by RIFT members as a public acknowledgement of the strong, supportive expat friendships formed across all of France as a result of protests against the referendum result. RIFT, along with the rest of the groups in the British in Europe coalition, will arrive back in London for the November 5 Last Mile campaign, during which a human chain will be formed by RIFT and the 3Million, stretching from Parliament Square to Downing Street. A letter demanding the ring-fencing of the rights of British expats as well as a stronger withdrawal agreement covering the rights will be delivered. On the same afternoon, the groups will stage a mass lobby of Parliament. According to Meadows, the fight will go on.

Spokesperson for British in Europe Laura Sheilds told reporters it’s clear that Brexit, no matter whether it’s a no-deal or a bad deal, will be a disaster for the UK and its entire population as well as for British expatriates living, working and retiring in Europe. A Peoples’ Vote, she said, is essential, and must include all UK expats who were unable to vote due to the 15-year disenfranchisement ruling. All, she said, have the right to vote on their futures, and urged all Brits in Europe to write to their MPs in support of a People’s Vote. Shields believes expats were ‘gagged’ in 2016, and is determined to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
