After his whereabouts were unknown for a month amid a suspected kidnapping case, Canadian expat Ryan Piercy turned up at his him in the Costa Rican capital San Jose on Saturday, announced the country’s Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ).

Forty-five-year-old Piercy disappeared on 20 January in suspicious circumstances. His wife’s car that he was driving was left with the engine running and its doors open at the side of the Route 32 road just north of San Jose.

Maicol Soto, the director of criminal investigations at the OIJ, confirmed that the Canadian arrived at his home in western San Jose in a taxi at midnight on Saturday night and was allowed to spend time with his family before being questioned by police.

Soto gave no further details, adding that he would make a full statement after debriefing Piercy.

For more than four weeks, Piercy’s family and colleagues at the Association of Residents of Costa Rica, where he is a board member, have remained silent about the incident. Although it has yet to be confirmed if he was abducted, his disappearance bears all the hallmarks to a kidnapping.
