The May 2013 Canadian immigration list of occupations in demand in the country took overseas nurses and doctors by surprise, as it excluded medical professionals and concentrated on engineers.

However, the Quebec government’s recent revamp of their list now includes nurses, giving those shut out earlier this year another chance to emigrate to Canada. Graduate nurses are now in high demand in the province, with the Canadian Nurses Association predicting some 60,000 vacancies over the next nine years.

As a result, overseas nurses who would have qualified under the previous Federal immigration scheme can now qualify under the province’s revamped requirements. Quebec province is French as well as English-speaking, with a high points ranking for knowledge of French, but the maximum points, 16, are now being allocated for professional nursing qualifications.

Requirements include a three-year degree in nursing and five years’ full-time work experience. Applicants between the ages of 18 and 25 years will get the full points allowance for age, which falls for those older.

If an applicant is married, their spouse’s age and level of education can add bonus points to their own total, and extra points are allocated if the applicant is a parent. Self sufficiency and a minimum level of personal funds for maintenance is also required.

The changes mean that many would-be migrant nurses will now be able to apply for a work visa in the province. Once they are successful, a certificate will be issued allowing them to apply to Citizenship and Immigration Canada for a permanent residence visa.
