A Scottish grandmother who moved to South Africa 35 years ago has been murdered in her Cape Town home.
Sandra Malcolm, 74, was due to fly back to Scotland in May to visit friends and relatives but her grandson discovered her hacked to death in her home on Sunday morning. Police have launched a manhunt for the killers.
The killing of Ms Malcolm, who was originally from Angus, occurred in Marina da Gama, roughly 30 minutes’ drive from Cape Town’s city centre and near the scenic False Bay. Authorities are still unsure about how her body wound up in her apartment at the Capri Mews complex.
News agencies in the country have reported that her body had been mutilated but police declined to confirm that.
Ms Malcolm’s nephew, Colin Chambers, said the whole family had been left numb by the murder. He described the situation as “completely shocking”, adding that he had never had to deal with news like that before. He said that he did not want to comment on the speculation at present because the family knew very little about what had happened.
Police revealed that a post-mortem into Ms Malcolm’s death would be carried out in order to find out the exact cause.
