A petition calling for access to joint nationality for Brits living in Spain is now calling for Spaniards to sign in support of the initiative.

In yet another attempt to regularise their post-Brexit situation, Britons living, working and retiring in Spain are asking the Spanish people to join with them to ensure a future for both expats and the businesses supplying them. Over 15,000 expats have signed in the two weeks since the Olive Press English language newspaper publicised and sponsored the move.

It’s clear to most of the hundreds of thousands of expats living in Spain that dual nationality is the only sure way to stay in their chosen country. Relying on soundbites from UK politicians is one reason, they say, for the Brexit disaster, and isn’t the way forward to guarantee their present lifestyle. The petition tells Spanish readers that the expat community needs their support in order to stay living and working in the country.

Spain, it adds, is our home, with many of us starting businesses and raising families. Many more have Spanish spouses or partners and plenty now speak Spanish, at least to some degree. In general, it continues, we believe we contribute a considerable amount to the local Spanish economy, especially in the cities along the Mediterranean coastline, and our historic links to Spain include writings by authors who loved the country as we do.

We are, it says, entirely against Brexit and its xenophobic campaigning and downright lies, and we truly feel European rather than just British.Tragically, we are now in the firing line and are the most likely to have our lives destroyed. We ask the Spanish people to understand our position as regards working and living in your country.

After five years’ residence the UK, it points out, Spaniards can apply and get joint citizenship, and we’re pleading for the same chance for British expats here. Our appeal comes 80 years since the start of the Spanish Civil War which drew thousands of young Brit fighters, many of whom lost their lives due to their passionate belief in Spain. We have the same belief, and need your help as we do not, under any circumstances, wish to return to the UK.
