The UAE may stop deporting expats who have been convicted of using drugs so long as they have been in the country for 15 consecutive years.
A police team charged with evaluating anti-drug measures in the country made the recommendation in a report passed on to the competent authorities for a final ruling.
The committee also put forward a motion to treat expat drug addicts in the country in the same way they would with Emiratis and that and that courts should issue other sentences such as community service.
The report stated that the new recommendation involved abolishing deportation as a punishment for expat drug addicts who have resided in the UAE for no less than 15 consecutive years, as well as treating foreign drug addicts in the country the same way as Emiratis are treated.
It went on to say that the committee suggested courts should put alternative sentences in place against those convicted of taking drugs, while judges should make pre-emptive decisions such as compulsory treatment of addicts even if they have not been convicted. It added that they must not be denied treatment as they need it.
