The ex business partner of UK businessman Neil Heywood's supposed murderer has been taken into custody in Cambodia. in the latest news for the biggest Chinese political scandal in recent times, Patrick Devillers, a 51-year-old French architect, was jailed about 2-3 days ago in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh.
Spokesman for the Cambodian government Khieu Kanharith said that China had requested the suspect’s arrest due to possible association in the killing of UK businessman Neil Heywood.
However, Kanharith did not give any details of Devillers' suspected involvement, saying that Cambodia was examining whether to extradite him. The country wil not extradite Mr Devillers unless China offer more evidence, he added. Cambodia can hold the suspect for up to two months before deciding whether or not to extradite him.
This arrest is the most recent twist in the political scandal of Bo Xilai, the ex Communist Party chief of Chongqing city in China. His overthrow came after his ex police chief ran away to an American consulate and revealed suspicions that Gu Kailai, Bo's wife, was associated in the suspicious death of the British businessman Heywood last November.
While his wife was named a suspect in Mr Heywood's death, Bo has been the centre of a wide-ranging inquiry into malfeasance.
