Expats in Spain condemn EasyJet plan to transport tourists

British expats on the Costa del Sol are furious over EasyJet’s plans to transport tourists without risking bringing in the virus again.
An announcement by low-cost carrier EasyJet has resulted in expat fury amongst the Costa del Sol foreign communities. The airline’s plan to keep economy middle seats unoccupied on all tourism flights is being debunked as putting revenue before infection, especially as the seats in question are far less than even one metre wide. CEO of EasyJet Johan Lundgren’s take on the plan is that it will encourage passengers to fly to favourite Spanish sea, sun and sand destinations.
General feelings amongst expats in the region range from ‘shambles’, ‘chaos’ and the stated fact that it could well result in a new spread of the virus which, to date, has claimed huge numbers of innocent lives. One expat resident in Marbella told it like it is, saying the plan is absolute nonsense as social distancing should be at least a minimum of two metres, with another telling the airline to consider peoples’ lives rather than the airline’s bank balance.
Other comments included one Brit from Los Boliches who echoed others’ opinions in that Lundgren didn’t have a clue if he believes leaving out just one seat per row is the answer. In general, expat residents in all the popular Spanish destinations are scared that opening the borders too soon, especially to British visitors, is a disaster awaiting to happen due to the UK’s devastating infection and death numbers. As a result, most are hoping against hope that tourists will stay away until well after a vaccine has been developed, trialled and administered.
