A British expat living in Cadiz got the shock of his life when attempting to sell his Ford Mondeo.
When Elliot Higgins, now living in Cadiz’s Chiclana de Frontera, decided to sell his car, he couldn’t have imagined the consequences! After advertising the Ford Mondeo online, he received a reply from a couple requesting a test drive to ensure the car was as he’d described. Pleased with the swift response, he agreed and took the couple for a drive as requested. Having stopped to fill the tank, he couldn’t believe his eyes when the couple sped off in the car, leaving him stranded and his car stolen.
Three weeks later, to his amazement, he received a call from Spanish police saying the car had been found at a Valencia car dealership some 780kms from his home. According to police, a GPS radio had been found in the car, revealing it had been driven half way across Europe including to Poland and the Czech Republic. After dumping Elliot’s motor, the original thieves had immediately made off with a Mercedes, using a gun to persuade the owner to let the car go.
Back at police headquarters, Elliot identified the thieves, a pair known in the area for stealing motorbikes and who had a long list of other arrests for various crimes including sexual assault. Elliot’s quite relieved his carjack experience happened the way it did, as news of the gun used in the second car theft made him realise he could have been killed as they were obviously determined to get his car one way or another. It seems the pair may be linked to people trafficking and drug dealing and are wanted to several crimes including the sexual assault. It’s not all bad news for Elliot, as he’s an amateur filmmaker and is now determined to convert his unfortunate experience into mini-film drama.
