A survey by HSBC had rated the Thai island of Phuket as the best destination in the world for expat living.
Phuket and the rest of Thailand rated highly in the bank’s survey of 4,000 expats living in over 100 countries. Topics surveyed were work-life balance, setting up finances, ease of integration and entertainment.
Thailand also rated highly as a destination for expat retirees. The new Royal Phuket Marina and its upscale La Reserve Residences took the prize for family accommodation and ease of access by air.
It was named the ‘Best Place in the World for Expats to Live’ in the survey. Phuket is gaining a reputation as a yachting playground for the wealthy and famous, with a huge number of regular flights from European and Asian cities as well as 19 daily flights from the Thai capital, Bangkok.
The resort island’s resilience against the economic chaos in Europe resulted in a large increase in the number of visitors in 2011.A major draw is Phuket’s benign climate and its position in the Andaman Sea, a hub for diving and other water sports. Golf courses are also a favourite with expats living on the island.
