As the saga of the British drug smuggling expat couple continues, it seems they had lived a life of crime for some years and may not even have been married.
Appearances can be deceptive, but it seems the dodgy pair had a history many had suspected but no-one could prove until Roger and Susan Clarke were arrested in Lisbon along with nine kilos of cocaine intended for delivery in London. The retired couple had been living for around three years in an upscale villa in the Spanish resort town of Guardamar del Segura, a popular destination for elderly British expats. Roger had joined the local golf club and Susan went to spinning and yoga classes. However, friends invited to their home were amazed to find it practically unfurnished, as if this made it possible for the couple to leave post-haste if necessary.
In his Spanish hideaway, Roger told friends he’d been a chef working in a Michelin-starred eatery and owned two restaurants in Benidorm, but the truth is that he was a London-based truck driver. It’s not even certain whether the pair were married, as no trace of a marriage license has been found by journalists attempting to chart their lives. However, one revelation came from a former friend in the UK, who told reporters he’d smiled when he read about the Lisbon arrest of an expat couple, correctly convinced that Roger and Susan were up to their former old tricks again.
Further digging by reporters has revealed the pair were arrested for drug dealing in Norway, fled after they’d been granted bail and were finally extradited and sent back to face a Norwegian court. They both received jail sentences, after which they decamped to Spain via three years in a retirement complex in the Kent town of Orpington. This time, their sentences are likely to be far longer, giving Susan at least time to work out why she fell for Roger in the first place.
