One British couple were so incensed by the Leave victory in the Brexit referendum they immediately sold up, left the UK and are now permanently settled in Malta.
Like many millions in the UK, Nigel Lippard and his Hong Kong-born wife Linda didn’t believe the Leave campaign had even half a chance of winning the June 23 Brexit referendum. However, as the date approached and polls saw the gap between Remain and Leave narrowing, they became increasingly concerned.
Having woken up to their worst nightmare on June 24, the couple decided they’d had enough. That same afternoon, they put their house up for sale at a bargain price and began to plan their move to Malta, a destination they’d considered for relocation should the worst occur. Arriving on the Mediterranean island on 13th September with their former home already sold, they rented a long-let property and are planning to purchase a home at a later date.
When asked by local media why they’d taken such a drastic step so quickly after the Brexit result was announced, Lippard told of his shock and later anger that older voters had swung a result the young simply did not want. He added he was especially furious at the lies and manipulation of the right-wing press, especially when mentioning immigration. He believes Cameron, along with his cronies, sacrificed the country’s prosperity and future simply to prolong his term as Prime Minister.
Both Lippard and his wife became increasingly worried as the number of racially-motivated attacks increased across the UK immediately following the referendum. The couple were particularly concerned their retirement plans might well be wrecked by tumbling share prices and the fall in the value of the pound sterling. I
n the weeks before they left the UK, the couple watched in horror as Britain’s international reputation as a great nation collapsed. Both now think of themselves and their children as Europeans, with Lippard stating he wanted to live in Europe. Malta became their chosen destination due to its historical links with the UK, its balmy weather, healthy Mediterranean lifestyle and friendly people.
