Police in France have launched an investigation for an 80-year-old British expat after her rural home was found empty with lights on and two cups of unfinished coffee.
More than 70 officers in the Dordogne region supported by helicopters began the search for Violet Price after being alerted that her whereabouts were unknown.
She had met with family members for a barbecue in the town of Eymet last Saturday and has not been seen since. Her businessman son tried to call her later that day at the residence where she lives in nearby Moustier but got no reply.
Police went to the expat’s house and found no sign of her other than one full cup of coffee and another half empty. Her car was still outside and officers said there appeared to be no indication any kind of struggle was involved. A police source suggested that it had all the signs of a “hasty departure”.
Mrs Price, who has been married twice, was a popular figure in the area and was said to be loving life in the Dordogne. She left her London home two years ago so she could live nearer her son, but her French remains very limited.
A Foreign Office spokesman said that the family were being offered consular assistance.
