Gu Kailai’s trial for the murder of UK businessman Neil Heywood in China is over after just one day.
The trial, which took place in the city of Hefei, ended after Ms Gu decided against contesting the charge of murdering Mr Heywood by poisoning in November last year. A court official informed reporters that the verdict’s date would be announced later.
Ms Gu stood trial with her accomplice Zhang Xiaojun, who is believed to have aided her with the killing. Gu is married to former prominent politician Bo Xilai, whose was dismissed from his position due to corruption allegations and the Heywood scandal.
Two diplomats from the UK were allowed in to watch the proceedings, but no overseas media were allowed in. Tang Yigan, the court official, briefed the media by stating that the two defendants raised no objections to fact facts read out in court and the intentional homicide charges.
The official went on to say that Ms Gu had conducted business with Mr Heywood a number of times but this particular time they had had a dispute, leading to Ms Gu believing he was a threat to her son’s personal safety. This was the reason given for murdering Mr Heywood.
