UK expats in Spain are calling for a referendum vote on the British monarchy.
Even although they’re no longer living in the UK, British expats all along the Spanish coastline are dismayed and angry about the current state of the British monarchy. Headline, online and TV media news items have captured expats’ attention ever since the recent sex scandal involving Prince Andrew’s connection with convicted paedophile Geoffrey Epstein.
Both supporters of the monarchy and those who deride the institution well remember the bad publicity following Prince Charles’ and Diana’s divorce, and her tragic death was followed by Prince Andrew’s divorce from Sarah Ferguson. Prince William’s marriage and the birth of his three children quietened negative comments about the British Royal Family, and Prince Harry’s marriage to Megan Markle proved a breath of fresh air, even although younger Brits increasingly failed to see the relevance of Royalty and its cost to the taxpayer. In Spain, British expats were generally in its favour until this latest scandal hit the headlines via Prince Harry’s announcement that the couple were giving up their royal duties and effectively emigrating to Canada.
Although older Britons still seem to see the Royals as assets to the UK and its Commonwealth as well as appreciating they’re responsible for billions of pounds spent by tourists, an increasing number of UK nationals in Spain now believe it’s time the British people had their say over the traditional royal status. One female expat told local English language media she’d written several times to Downing Street, suggesting a Royal Family referendum, as she feels it’s now clear that millions of British citizens don’t want the institution to continue. Others are suggesting the Royals are a burden on the British taxpayer, sponging on public money whilst former military personnel are homeless.
Many admit the Queen has always been popular and has done a good job, but add she’s very old now and should perhaps consider retirement from her official duties. Others still believe the monarchy is the heart and soul of Great Britain, although several suggest Prince William would make a more suitable king than would his father. The resulting media poll of 100 expats resulted in 48 per cent agreeing a referendum would be the best idea.
