A recent survey from ECA International has revealed that expatriates living in Japan earn the highest pay and receive the best benefit packages in the whole of Asia, with expat managers generally expecting to receive a package totalling nearly US$375,000.

The MyExpatriate Market Pay Survey which was carried out by ECA looked at expatriate pay levels across the globe and also included information regarding tax treatments, benefits, salary calculation methods and allowances. The survey ranked Japan top amongst the 14 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Japan was followed by Australia, India came third, with China in forth place and Hong Kong in fifth.

Mainland China overtook Hong Kong last year and remains in forth place in the rankings. The average package for an expat middle manager living in Mainland China is just over US$276,000.

Quane said that that not all cities in China need such high packages. In tier-2 locations, the cost of benefits provision was much lower than of those in tier-1 cities, and by using the tier-2 figures alone, that China would be placed a lot further down the ranks just above Malaysia and Pakistan.

Expats living in Malaysia receive the second lowest expatriate package, whereas Thailand is ranked just one spot above Malaysia. Singapore dropped from sixth place to seventh in the last year even though the last twelve months has seen an increase in the cost of a package.
