Gu Kailai, the wife of former Chinese politician Bo Xilai, is on trial charged with British businessman Neil Heywood’s murder,
Mr Heywood died last year in the Chinese city of Chongqing, and Gu has been charged with poisoning him. State media has said there is a “substantial” case against her and an accomplice being responsible for the death.
China is set to put new leaders in place and Bo Xilai, who was head of the Communist party in Chongqing before news of the scandal broke, had previously been one of the names touted for the top positions. However, he was removed from his role in March and is being investigated for “disciplinary violations”.
Mr Heywood was found dead in a Chongqing hotel room in November last year, with the cause of death initially said to be a heart attack. However, four months after the incident, police chief Wang Lijun, who worked side-by-side with Mr Bo, fled to the local US consulate to claim there had been a murder and a huge cover-up.
Gu and an accomplice, Zhang Xiaojun, are now on trial for Mr Heywood’s murder. It has been reported that Gu and her son Bo Guagua had a strong disagreement with Mr Heywood, who was a business associate of theirs, over economic interests and Ms Gu felt that Mr Heywood threatened her son’s security.
