Irish retiree Catherine Guy quit her homeland last year and headed for the Spanish town of Vera and, having previously been committed to her role as a music teacher, found herself with plenty of time on her hands and a desire to travel.
However, there was one slight problem that prevented her doing so: her dogs had moved with her. Despite loving life in Spain, a country she regularly visited on holidays before retiring, Catherine, with her new found freedom, wanted to travel around and see family and friends across Europe and Canada. But with two spaniels to look after she found herself in a bit of a conundrum.
Yet last December everything changed for the better when she found HouseSitMatch, a website designed specifically for people looking to find housesitters.
Catherine said she is now 100 per cent satisfied with life, which was not the case previously as she had to leave her beloved dogs in places she wasn’t completely happy with. However, she admitted that she now had complete faith they were being left in safe hands.
And the agreement can work both ways, too. One couple who have looked after the dogs are Keith and Laurie, a retired couple from the US who are travelling the world and housesitting and petsitting to take advantage of free accommodation.
Catherine is set to jet off again in July, when she will leave her house and spaniels to Rob and Tracey, a Canadian couple who have taken career breaks to travel with their son for a few years.
Meanwhile, Catherine also gives back to those in her situation by being signed up as a housesitter as well. She noted that it allowed you to see the world, save on accommodation and look after pets.
