Finding the perfect love match is now an officially-confirmed reason for migration to a far-off land, as many expats find once they’ve taken the plunge.
One light-hearted result of this year’s HSBC Expat Explorer survey of over 9,000 expats settled all over the world is that many found the love of their life after leaving the UK. An average of 36 per cent of those surveyed admitted that they’d fallen for a local girl.
Top of the tree for suitable partners was romantic Italy, with 57 per cent of respondents cohabiting happily in a mix of Italian and English. Russian ladies are almost equally popular, with 49 per cent now married to expats, and China’s exotic women have charmed the same percentage of new male arrivals from the West.
Thailand is famous for its Thai brides, with 46 per cent of respondents now supporting their very own Thai beauty, her family and several buffaloes, but Dutch girls won out in the love stakes with a 48 per cent result. Those heading to the UK for a new life are 50 per cent likely to find a new wife as well, even although most migrant males consider British pubs as a highlight of their social lives.
Brits on their way out for whatever reason tend to prefer English-speaking countries over more exotic lands, possibly because they enjoy challenging conversation as an essential part of married life. Unsurprisingly, Australia, Canada and New Zealand are the favourite choices, whether for retirement or work.
