An expert reserching Britons’ overseas participation in home country political matters as well as voting strategies has launched two online surveys.

University of Sussex professor Dr Susan Collard is attempting by the use of two online surveys to discover how UK expats voted in last year’s EU referendum and the previous general election in addition to how they plan to vote in Thursday’s snap election. The first short survey refers to the snap election and needs to be completed by voting day this Thursday.

Britons Abroad 2, the longer, more in-depth survey, is being undertaken to give more information on the British expat community overseas, and is aimed at UK citizens over 18 years of age who are at present living overseas. Its first task is to gather data on Britons living outside the home country, including places of residence, age, gender, education, why respondents left the UK and whether they have any intention of returning permanently in the future.

The second aim of the survey is to garner views on current UK voting rights and practices, especially in reference to the 2015 general election and the EU referendum. The third is to gather responses to the prospect of Britain’s leaving the EU post-Brexit, and is open to all British expats wherever in the world they are based. The study is anonymous, although Collard feels it would help her research if respondents gave their email addresses so that they can be contacted should she need clarification or expansion on answers given.

The survey also gives an opportunity for participants to take part in a telephone interview examining their answers as well as further related questions, and can be found at https://sussex.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/britons-abroad-2. All completed surveys will be strictly confidential.
