A long-term campaigner against the disenfranchisement of expats living overseas for more than 15 years, Harry Shindler has been recognised for his work to find British servicemen’s WWII graves.
Now in his early 90’s, Mr Shindler is a veteran of the WWII liberation of Rome and the Battle of Anzio, and has long been active in tracing the graves of British soldiers killed or registered as missing in action. He has been living in Italy with his Italian wife since just after WWII ended.
A long-term campaigner for the reversal of the rule which states expats living outside the UK for more than 15 years cannot vote in EU parliamentary and other elections, Mr Shindler is determined not to give up his fight. Recently he lost a European Court battle which he undertook on behalf of some five million overseas Brits who are affected by the rule, but told the media his struggle would continue.
He is also fighting for parliamentary representation in the UK to cover Britons living overseas. Given that many UK pensioners living overseas are about to lose their winter fuel payments and many more are suffering due to the frozen pensions rule, the people Mr Shindler is supporting will at least be happy that he has been recognised for yet another service to his fellow Brits.
